The one of Japan’s oldest and most prestigious public golf courses
Fujiya Hotel Sengoku Golf Course, located in Sengokuhara, Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, is one of Japan’s oldest and most prestigious public golf courses. The course first opened on July 28, 1917, with the initial 7 holes designed by F.E. Colchester. In 1935, Shiro Akaboshi added the remaining 11 holes, completing it as an 18-hole, par‑72 course. The back tees measure around 6,651 yards (regular tees approximately 6,200 yards).
Nestled in gentle hills, the course minimizes steep elevation changes but features enough natural undulation to keep play engaging and strategic. It includes four water-hazard holes, 52 bunkers, and two bent-grass greens per hole, offering a layout that is both approachable and tactically rich.
The overall topography is relatively flat with gentle undulation, but the strategic nature of holes—especially the raised greens and approach challenges on the inland (IN) side—enhances play. The course rating from the back tees is 72.4 with a slope of 123, marking it best suited for intermediate to advanced players. Though no holes are officially designated as “signature”, standout moments include the opening holes with subtle elevation changes and the IN holes featuring elevated (“plateau”) greens and water relevancy. Players often comment on the deliberate layout that blends challenge with natural beauty.
The Front 9 holes side is described as expansive and scenic, while the Back 9 holes side provides a tougher strategic test with tiered greens—but overall, the course retains a calm, classic character rooted in its storied history. Many golfers appreciate the cooler, comfortable summer climate at this high-altitude location. Well-maintained fairways and greens with highly praised staff hospitality by the players.
The clubhouse restaurant, Wisteria, offers a blend of Japanese and Western dishes enjoyed by golfers and non-golfers alike, with scenic views of Hakone’s landscape:
