A strategic course designed by Desmond Muirhead
Wakagi Golf Club, opened on October 10, 1991, is a championship 18-hole, par-72 course measuring 6,837 yards. Designed by the innovative Desmond Muirhead, who incorporated elements of St. Andrews’ traditions, the course spans approximately 1.04 million sqm of rolling terrain.
The practice facilities include a 220-yard driving range with 10 bays, putting green, and dedicated bunker and approach areas. The club also offers lodging cottages with hot-spring baths, while the clubhouse houses a restaurant, lounge, pro shop, and more
The course blends playful design with natural beauty, featuring features such as a “lion’s mouth” bunker on Hole 8 and “principal’s nose” bunker on Hole 10—homages to St. Andrews—along with a creek resembling Saga Creek and Argileware-inspired bunkers . Signature holes include strategic water- and valley-crossing layout on Holes 11 and 17 .
With moderate elevation changes and undulating greens, the course challenges mid-to-advanced golfers to hone club selection and shot placement. The course rating of 72.9 reflects its championship difficulty.
Player reviews consistently highlight its exhilarating challenge and superior maintenance, with comments like “really tough and super fun” and “strategic layout well maintained” .
Dining at the clubhouse features generous options such as omelets, fried chicken set meals, sarauodon noodles, authentic tan-tan men, and the signature Saga Wagyu steak bowl—each praised for quality and flavor .
