A course that maximizes the beauty of Hokkaido’s great outdoors
Tsukisappu Golf Club, established in 1974, is a historic course located approximately 40 minutes from central Sapporo and about 50 minutes from New Chitose Airport via expressway. Designed by the renowned architect Kokichi Yasuda, this 7,000‑yard championship course is set within the expansive natural forests of Hokkaido. While the layout offers a sense of openness unique to the region, its strategic design inspires a golfer’s competitive spirit and provides a rewarding challenge for players of all levels.
Surrounded by both coniferous and broadleaf trees, the course showcases beautiful seasonal scenery. Its slightly higher elevation compared to central Sapporo keeps temperatures 2–3°C cooler, allowing for a more comfortable playing environment, especially in summer. The name “Tsukisappu” originates from the Ainu language, meaning “a slope at the edge of a hill,” reflecting the area’s natural heritage. Each hole is named after local trees and plants, allowing golfers to enjoy the distinctive landscapes of Hokkaido throughout their round.
The course features a predominantly flat forest layout with wide fairways and few out‑of‑bounds areas, encouraging confident tee shots. Large bentgrass greens add strategic complexity, and the long par‑4 holes make even long hitters work hard for a par‑on. Shots that go beyond the green often leave a downhill approach, making score management a true test of skill. Among the highlights is a beautifully framed long hole surrounded by birch and pine trees, widely regarded as the club’s signature experience.
The standard playing style is walking with a caddie. A limited number of two‑seater riding carts are available by reservation. For self‑play, golfers use two‑seater carts equipped with GPS; groups of three to four players will use two carts, although the second cart may not have GPS.
The clubhouse restaurant offers a selection of dishes that showcase the flavors of Hokkaido, including the club’s popular curry rice, soup curry, seasonal Japanese set meals, and monthly chef’s specials—perfect for relaxing after a round.
Conveniently located at 412‑5 Ariake, Kiyota‑ku, Sapporo, the club is easily accessible: approximately 20 minutes from the Kitahiroshima Interchange, 40 minutes from central Sapporo, and 15 minutes from Makomanai Subway Station. Celebrated as a “hidden gem” left by Kokichi Yasuda, Tsukisappu Golf Club continues to be highly regarded for its blend of natural beauty and strategic course design.
