Course Description

Ocean, wind, and water: Mitsuaki Kobayashi’s strategic seaside gem on Notojima.

Designed by the legendary Mitsuaki Kobayashi—often hailed as the "Magician of Water"—and opened in 1983, Notojima Golf and Country Club is a premier seaside destination set against the stunning coastline of Nanao Bay in Ishikawa Prefecture. The course is defined by Kobayashi’s signature aesthetic, seamlessly integrating expansive water features with the natural maritime landscape. Offering breathtaking ocean views from every hole, the layout transcends typical resort golf, presenting a high-caliber strategic challenge that demands both intellectual play and technical precision.

The course features a predominantly flat terrain artfully punctuated by undulating fairways, strategic bunkering, and crystalline ponds that mirror the surrounding sea. Managed by the Lotte Group, it maintains the same elite maintenance standards and luxurious atmosphere as its sister course, Lotte Minayoshidai, making it a true crown jewel of the Hokuriku region.

Pre-Round Strategic Insights to Know Before Playing Notojima Golf and Country Club

Here are the key pieces of strategic information that players should understand in advance to effectively navigate the course:

  1. Respect the "Magician’s" water hazards

True to Kobayashi’s style, water is the primary strategic defender here. Ponds and creeks are positioned to guard landing zones and green surrounds, forcing players to choose between aggressive carries and disciplined lay-ups. Success hinges on clear decision-making before every shot.

  2. Account for the shifting sea breezes

As a coastal course on the Noto Peninsula, wind is a constant and decisive factor. The strength and direction of the breeze can change rapidly, often requiring a difference of two or more clubs on par-3s. Gauging the wind aloft versus at ground level is essential for accurate distance control.

  3. Read the grain and slope of the high-speed greens

The large bentgrass greens are meticulously groomed for high speed and smooth rolling. Due to the proximity to the sea, the "grain" can subtly influence the break even on seemingly flat putts. Combining visual intuition with a careful study of the surrounding topography is the key to avoiding three-putts.

  4. Navigate the strategic white-sand bunkers

Artistically placed bunkers serve as both visual accents and tactical barriers. The greenside bunkers, in particular, are deep and require confident explosion shots. Aiming for safety zones away from these hazards is often the smarter route to a consistent scorecard.

The course reaches a dramatic climax on the final holes, where the deep blue of Nanao Bay frames the fairway for an unforgettable finish. Complementing the world-class golf is a refined clubhouse that exemplifies Lotte’s high standards of luxury, offering a tranquil space to unwind after the round.

The restaurant is a highlight of the Notojima experience, renowned for its exquisite cuisine featuring the freshest seafood and local delicacies from the Noto region. With its blend of Kobayashi’s water-centric artistry, magnificent ocean views, and world-class hospitality, Notojima Golf and Country Club offers a sophisticated and deeply rewarding golfing experience.
