A masterfully designed course that reflects the visionary philosophy of Desmond Muirhead
Brick & Wood Club is a beautiful 18-hole golf course located in the hilly landscape of Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture. Designed by the renowned Desmond Muirhead, the course offers a perfect blend of strategic challenge and scenic beauty. Stretching approximately 7,000 yards, it features five sets of tees to accommodate players of all skill levels. The clubhouse, designed in the style of a traditional Japanese farmhouse, offers a charming atmosphere with a well-appointed restaurant and lounge. The club operates in a simple, American-style manner, with self-service and no lunch break as the standard play style. Designed by the legendary Desmond Muirhead, our course offers a high level of difficulty and strategic complexity.
The signature hole at Brick & Wood Club are as follows.
Hole 3: “French Onion”
This par-3, approximately 222 yards from the back tee, is a dramatic downhill hole that demands precision. The green is a long, narrow three-tiered layout, requiring careful control of both distance and direction. A pond guards the front, a deep bunker sits to the right, and beyond that lies out-of-bounds—making this a high-pressure tee shot. With OB on both sides and the risk of overshooting into the cart path, accuracy is essential. The name “French Onion” is said to reflect the layered complexity of the hole, much like the layers of an onion.
Hole 10: “Gamblers”
This par-5, measuring 492 yards from the back tee, lives up to its name by challenging players to take risks. Strategic decisions begin with the tee shot and continue through the second shot—whether to lay up or go for the green. Each choice carries consequences, making this hole a true test of judgment and nerve. “Gamblers” rewards bold play but punishes miscalculations, embodying the spirit of risk and reward.
Hole 18 , “Waterfall.”
This final hole combines stunning natural beauty with strategic challenge, featuring a waterfall landscape that lives up to its name. It reflects Desmond Muirhead’s design philosophy, blending harmony with nature and thoughtful complexity for players.
As a privately operated club managed by its members, players are expected to follow a self-service, no-break “through play” style. This includes handling their own golf bags—loading and unloading them from their vehicles and onto the carts—as well as using self-service in the restaurant.
In response to the passionate vision of its founding members to create a truly unique and unprecedented golf club, the world-renowned course designer Desmond Muirhead was invited to design the course at Brick & Wood Club. During the planning process, the club’s representatives presented several key requests. They asked for a course that would fully embrace the natural landscape while offering rich strategic complexity.
In particular, they emphasized the following four points:
A. Course Design :
The course should be enjoyable for all types of players: – Gentle for beginners – Pleasant for intermediate players – Challenging for advanced players It should be a course that never grows tiresome, regardless of skill level.
B. Water Features:
Lakes, streams, and other water elements should be harmoniously integrated with the natural surroundings, creating a beautiful and serene environment.
C. Trees and Landscaping:
Tree removal should be minimized to preserve nature. Landscaping should encourage interaction with the natural environment, be cost-effective, and require minimal maintenance—while still maintaining aesthetic appeal.
D. Access Road :
The road from the prefectural road to the clubhouse should be constructed using cost-efficient methods, yet finished beautifully to complement the overall setting.
The club warmly invites you to experience the masterfully crafted course by Desmond Muirhead—and to test your skills on a layout unlike any other.
