A "Fair" Challenge from the Golden Bear, Jack Nicklaus
Located in Komono Town, Mie Prefecture, with the stunning Mount Gozaisho as its backdrop, this course was personally designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus. The "Golden Bear’s" philosophy—testing not just power, but intelligence and technique—is woven into every one of its 18 holes.
Opened in 1992, Komono Golf Club was built on the foundation of "Visual Fairness." While Nicklaus courses are often known for their difficulty, this layout ensures that bunkers, water hazards, and greens are clearly visible from the tee or the Landing Area (IP point). There are no "blind" traps meant to deceive; instead, the course rewards players who make the right tactical decisions.
The true hallmark of this course is that it is designed to make you "use every club in your bag."
The gentle mounds and slopes extending from the fairways to the rough give the course a soft, picturesque appearance. However, these subtle contours create various lies that demand careful shot-making.
The layout features a mix of reachable par-5s and varied par-4s. Nicklaus has provided "Birdie Routes"—high-risk lines that can lead to big scores if missed—as well as safer "Par Routes" for those who play more conservatively, where a good up-and-down for par is always within reach.
Since the green surfaces are clearly visible from the fairway, the key to scoring well is positioning your drive to create the best angle for your approach shot.
Signature Hole
The 18th Hole (Par 4): A beautiful and strategic finishing hole playing back toward the clubhouse. With water often coming into play, it tests your nerves and concentration until the very last putt. It perfectly embodies Nicklaus’s signature blend of aesthetic beauty and competitive rigor.
Cuisine
The clubhouse restaurant is highly regarded for its hospitality and local flavors.
Tonteki (Pork Steak) Set: A famous local specialty of the Yokkaichi/Komono area. This thick, juicy pork steak sautéed in a rich, savory garlic sauce is the ultimate stamina meal for hungry golfers.
Seasonal Delicacies of Komono: The menu also features traditional Japanese sets using fresh, local ingredients, providing a refined dining experience in a relaxing atmosphere.
Komono Golf Club is a masterclass in honest design. While it presents a gentle, rolling landscape, it demands a sophisticated game of "Target Golf." Whether you choose to play aggressively for a birdie or take the steady route for a par, every shot will test your skill and decision-making. It is a course that offers new discoveries with every round, making it a true favorite for those who appreciate the strategic genius of Jack Nicklaus.
