A Masterpiece of Strategy and Beauty
Token Shuga Country Club is a high-standard championship course born from the combined genius of legendary golfer Gary Player and one of Japan’s most prominent architects, Hirochika Tomizawa.
The club boasts a storied history of hosting prestigious professional tournaments, including the "Token Homemate Cup," the "Japan Women's Professional Golf Championship," and the "Japan Senior Open." Walking these fairways means following in the footsteps of legends like Isao Aoki and Akiko Fukushima.
Course Characteristics and Strategic Play:
The course is characterized by its flat, expansive terrain and wide fairways, offering a sense of freedom off the tee. While the low frequency of O.B. (Out of Bounds) leads to a high Green in Regulation (GIR) percentage, the true challenge lies in the green complexes.
True to Gary Player’s design philosophy, the greens are guarded by numerous strategically placed bunkers and feature subtle, intricate undulations. Success here requires more than just power; it demands precision and foresight. Players must carefully consider their landing zones to ensure an uphill putt, as the delicate slopes can easily turn a birdie opportunity into a difficult par save.
Signature Holes:
One of the most visually stunning locations is Hole 5 of the West Course (Par 3). This iconic short hole is surrounded by water, offering a beautiful landscape that simultaneously exerts immense mental pressure on the tee shot. Additionally, Hole 9 of the North Course (Par 5) serves as a dramatic finale, featuring a two-tiered green and strategic bunkering that tests a player’s nerve and club selection until the very last putt.
Exquisite Dining Experience:
The culinary offerings at the clubhouse are as much a draw as the golf itself. The restaurant features a menu centered on seasonal, local ingredients from Gifu Prefecture. The Hida Beef dishes are a particular highlight, offering a luxurious taste of the region’s finest wagyu. Other fan favorites include the signature homemade dashimaki tamago (rolled omelet), prepared with a secret traditional broth.
Rounding Rotation:
The club consists of 27 holes divided into three courses: West, North, and South-East. The standard play rotation follows this sequence:
West Course → North Course
North Course → South-East Course
South-East Course → West Course
Each combination offers a unique rhythm and aesthetic, ensuring that every visit provides a fresh and intellectually stimulating round of golf.
