The grandeur of Hokkaido’s natural landscape paired with outstanding course conditions
Hokkaido River Hill Golf Club is a hidden gem known for its outstanding, strategically designed layout built on naturally flat terrain. With minimal elevation change and short distances between holes, the course is ideal for traditional walking play and offers a comfortable experience for golfers of all levels.
Its accessibility is exceptional—located just a 15‑minute drive from New Chitose Airport, the club is perfectly positioned for travelers. It also provides easy access to central Sapporo as well as Hokkaido’s renowned hot spring regions, including Noboribetsu and Lake Toya, making it an excellent addition to any travel itinerary.
The course features a flat yet highly strategic design, with ponds, bunkers, and hazards positioned thoughtfully throughout. Accurate shot‑making and smart course management are essential. Course maintenance is consistently excellent, with well‑kept fairways and greens, and superb drainage that allows play even after rain with virtually no standing water. The staff are known for their warm and attentive service, adding to the welcoming atmosphere.
The clubhouse is also well‑loved, especially for its popular katsu sandwich, a favorite among many regular players. Many golfers return year after year, treating the club almost like their home course.
Signature Holes are follows,
-- OUT 4 (Par 4 / 360 yards)
Although not long at 360 yards from the regular tees, this is one of the most demanding holes on the course. The left side drops sharply into a ravine, resulting in a high number of OBs. Known as the hole where players most often get into trouble, it requires a precise and disciplined tee shot.
-- OUT 6 (Par 3 / 169 yards)
A scenic par‑3 played over a pond. While the distance is moderate, the hole is highly exposed to the wind, and its difficulty varies significantly depending on wind direction. Club selection and commitment are crucial.
--OUT 9 (Par 4 / 427 yards)
The toughest finishing hole on the front nine and the longest par‑4 on the course. Even from the regular tees, the 427‑yard distance makes reaching the green in regulation difficult for all but the longest hitters. A demanding hole that requires both distance and accuracy.
-- IN 12 (Par 5 / 503 yards)
A “long‑drive recommended” par‑5 where players can enjoy a bold, aggressive tee shot. Although not overly long, the fairway narrows in key areas, placing a premium on direction rather than pure distance. With good placement, both par and birdie are well within reach.
With its flat yet strategic layout, excellent conditioning, warm hospitality, and unbeatable access from New Chitose Airport, Hokkaido River Hill Golf Club offers a uniquely enjoyable and memorable golfing experience. Its thoughtful design challenges skilled players while remaining welcoming to all, and its signature holes provide both excitement and strategic depth.
