Hokkaido's Premier Forest Golf Experience
Nidom Classic Course, opened in 1988, is one of Hokkaido’s premier golf resorts. The name “Nidom” comes from the Ainu language, meaning “rich forest,” and the course lives up to that name with 45 beautifully crafted holes spread across the vast natural forests of Tomakomai. The setting offers a sense of grandeur and tranquility that captivates every golfer who visits. Nidom’s 45 holes are defined not only by their breathtaking natural setting but also by the strategic depth woven into every shot. Each hole is framed by forest‑lined fairways that provide complete separation and a sense of immersion in nature. The routing makes full use of the land’s natural elevation changes—up to 25 meters—creating dynamic visuals and demanding precise club selection. Creeks, ponds, and untouched native forest function as natural hazards, shaping strategy from the tee to the green. The fast bentgrass greens reward accuracy and touch, while the ever‑changing wind conditions add another layer of complexity, often influencing shot‑making in decisive ways. Together, these elements create a course that is as beautiful as it is challenging, inspiring golfers to think creatively and play boldly.
The design concept is “Beautiful & Tough – eternally beautiful, eternally grand.” The property features two distinct courses: Nispa Course (18 holes), meaning “chief” in Ainu, and Ikoro Course (27 holes), meaning “treasure.” Each of the 45 holes is separated by pristine forest, shaped around natural undulations with a maximum elevation change of 25 meters. The result is a layout where natural beauty and bold architectural vision coexist in perfect harmony.
The fairways and rough use cool‑season grasses—ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass—with mowing heights set at 18 mm for fairways and 34 mm for rough, creating clear visual definition. Precision zebra‑cut patterns add both beauty and strategic challenge. Landing areas are kept wide, while areas outside them are intentionally tighter, offering a fair yet demanding setup.
The greens are Penncross bentgrass, maintained at 3–4 mm with speeds of 9.5–11 feet on the Stimpmeter and a compaction value of 22–23. With minimal grain and subtle contours, the greens roll
smoothly and hold spin well. Regular aeration and topdressing maintain firmness, smoothness, and overall quality.
Soon after opening, Nidom gained recognition as a championship venue capable of testing the world’s best players. Its combination of natural beauty and strategic complexity has produced numerous memorable battles.
1990–1992: PGA Senior Tour – Sam Snead Cup
The strategic use of creeks and ponds, along with the influence of wind, earned high praise and brought national attention to Nidom.
1994–2003: Japan PGA Match Play Championship (10 consecutive years)
The Nispa Course, with its clear risk–reward structure, proved ideal for head‑to‑head match play, producing many dramatic moments.
2006: Japan Women’s Professional Golf Championship (Konica Minolta Cup)
Ai Miyazato claimed victory here. The fast bent greens and wind‑exposed terrain highlighted the precision of the women’s professional field.
2018: Japan Senior Open (Prayad Marksaen’s third consecutive win)
The demanding setup challenged even the top senior professionals, reaffirming Nidom’s reputation as a true championship course.
These events demonstrate that Nidom is far more than a resort course—it is a genuine championship venue where professionals compete at the highest level. Golfers are constantly challenged to combine precision with thoughtful course management, inspiring a strong sense of competitive spirit.

A shimmering pond guards the approach, dazzling players and influencing club selection. A hole where beauty and danger coexist.
Ikoro Pirika 5 – “Temptation of the Beauty”
An unforgettable downhill hole with an 8‑meter drop and three natural creeks crossing the fairway. Its breathtaking scenery often tempts players into aggressive lines, causing shots to scatter left and right—perfectly living up to its name.
